WASHINGTON - A high-level delegation from the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) and the Fair Labour Association (FLA) visited the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently to discuss workers' rights and explore avenues for strengthening U.S.-Bangladesh collaboration in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector.

Led by BGMEA Administrator Anwar Hossain, the delegation also included support committee members Asif Ashraf, Rezwan Selim, ANM Saifuddin, Shehabudduza Chowdhury, and Shams Mahmud. Together, they engaged in discussions with representatives from AAFA and FLA.

The meeting focused on the importance of fostering a sustainable and ethical RMG industry in Bangladesh while enhancing trade relations with the United States. Key topics included workers' rights, workplace safety, labour laws, and ongoing reforms in Bangladesh.

Discussions also highlighted crucial areas such as improving trade access for Bangladeshi apparel in the U.S. market, promoting responsible purchasing practices, and recognising the industry's progress in sustainability.

Both sides explored potential collaborations on worker training programmes and other initiatives aimed at further advancing worker welfare within the RMG sector.

BGMEA urged AAFA, representing over 1,000 globally  brands, retailers, and manufacturers, and FLA to advocate for responsible purchasing practices that benefit both buyers and suppliers. BGMEA also requested AAFA’s support in championing Bangladesh’s trade interests in the U.S. market to ensure mutual growth and success.

The AAFA and FLA delegation praised Bangladesh for its progress in advancing workers' rights, particularly the government’s initiatives in forming the labour reform commission and implementing labour law reforms.
